WELCH (AP) — State Police in the Welch Detachment have seized more than $11.2 million worth of marijuana plants.

Sgt. W.C. Tupper says police seized 5,621 pot plants in a six-week period that ended Friday. Some of the growing operations had sophisticated irrigation systems and fences designed to keep deer away from the crop.

State Police were assisted by the Division of Natural Resources and a helicopter unit from the Army National Guard.

Tupper says this isn't the largest six-week haul the detachment has ever handled. Four years ago, troopers got more than 9,000 plants during sweeps.
