“We just lost a tough one “ said Tug Valley Head Coach Josh Duty after the game. “The numbers game came into play and fatigue got us late in the game and really caused the score to not indicate how close the game really was.”
Tug Valley quarterback Cody Varney had a stellar night, completing 15 of 20 passes for 325 yards and threw for four touchdowns. Varney also carried the ball six times for 25 yards.
“Cody would have had an unbelievable career if he hadn’t been injured in two different years that derailed a lot of his playing time.” Said Duty of Varney. “But Cody is really talented and one of the best players in the area and state athletically.”
“The players are working hard, and it showed tonight.” Said Duty.
The Panther receiving corps was especially strong against the Rebels as two players had over 100 receiving yards on the night. Nathaniel Sturgill had five receptions for 145 yards and was on the receiving end of two of Varney’s touchdown passes while Dustin Marcum hauled in three receptions for 110 yards receiving with one touchdown catch. Brandon Urban also garnered three receptions for sixty five yards receiving with one touchdown grab.
In addition to Varney’s rushing totals, Marcum also had ten rushing carries for forty yards and Jeff Mullins had five carries for forty yards.
“Don’t take anything away from our opponents, cause they’re good,” said Duty. “But we’re getting better. We just need the fans to be patient and continue to come out and support us.”
The Panthers hit the road next week, traveling to Iaegar to take on the Cubs down in McDowell County.
“Its’ a long way, but we’d like to see a lot of our fans following us on that next road trip,” said the coach. “ Our team needs that kind of show of support right now to help build confidence.”
