WILLIAMSON - The Big Creek Owls make their final trip to Matewan to night to take on the Tigers while the Tolsia Rebels march up US 52 North to tale on perhaps their oldest rival, the Tug Valley Panthers. The Belfry Pirates travel to Whitley County and the Montcalm Generals visit the Burch Bulldogs tonight.

The annual King Coal Festival is coming to an end in Williamson tomorrow but before it does, the Annual King Coal Bowl takes center stage in the festival tonight as two of Mingo County’s schools meet at Lefty Hamilton as the Gilbert Lions take on the host Williamson Wolfpack.

Although the forecast calls for only rain Friday night, expect all these area teams to add their own thunder to the mix.

GILBERT vs. WILLIAMSON

(King Coal Bowl)

After a big win last week in their home opener. the Williamson Wolfpack expct to be fired up for this one with the King Coal Bowl Trophy on the line.

The Gilbert Lions come to town, wounded, but angry, as they still deal with the loss of three players to injury two weeks ago against Westside, including quarterback Ashton Cline.

The Lions as always will put forward a power running game and it will be up to Williamson’s new 5-2 defense to put an early stop to them on the line of scrimmage or it could be a long night.

The Wolfpack come in after a fiery week of practice. Coach Ward had to intensify practice a little this week to bring the Wolfpack back down to earth after their home-opening win, but the Wolfpack appears ready for another win.

The game will probably come down to the battle of wits played between two of Mingo’s most veteran gridiron coaches in the Lion’s Gordon Carter and Williamson’s C. Douglas Ward.

BIG CREEK vs MATEWAN

This game should prove to be the most physical game on the week’s agenda as the Owls come to town for the last time to take on the Tigers with next year’s Iaegar-Big Creek consolidation scheduled for next fall.

Matewan come into this one after a stinging loss to Grundy last week. That’s always bad for their next opponent as veteran Coach Danny “Yogi” Kinder doesn’t let the Tigers rest on a loss for long.

Matewan has the ability to dominate this game offensively, even though virtually every coach who has seen them this season says that this is the best Big Creek team seen in sometime. Big Creek has large offensive and defensive line, but Matewan has the speed and size to compensate.

Look for this to be a dandy as both teams have pride on the line in this one.

TOLSIA vs TUG VALLEY

This one has so much history in it, that it is impossible to detail all of it here. Suffice it to say, this may be one of the two or three biggest rivalries in the state of West Virginia in every sport.

Coach Drew Waller brings his big offensive line and powerful running attack to Bob Brewer Stadium where the Panthers will counter with their diversified spread offense and hope their defense can rise to the occassion. This one would be big in the overall scheme of things for first year TVHS coach Josh Duty if his first win came here.

MONTCALM vs BURCH

It’s Montcalm’s power versus Burch’s speed here. This one is a close match-up and Bulldog fans shouldn’t really be surprised to see Win No. 2 here.

WHITLEY CO. vs BELFRY

Belfry won a close one last week. Don’t expect this one to be as close. The Pirates have some momentum going and Whitley County is probably at the wrong place at the wrong time. Look for Belfry to run wild all night long against the Whitley Co. defense.
