WEST UNION (AP) — Charges will likely be filed within days in the death of an inmate at the North Central Regional Jail.

State officials say 43-year-old Darryl Eugene Burton died earlier this week after a fight with a fellow prisoner.

His body has been sent to the state medical examiner for an autopsy.

Joe Thornton, deputy secretary of the Department of Military Affairs and Public Safety, says the fight broke out in a common area during breakfast. He does not believe a weapon was involved but says State Police and the Regional Jail Authority are investigating.

Burton was serving 10-20 years on a child sexual abuse conviction in Harrison County.

The jail near West Union is one of the largest in the state, designed to hold 400 inmates and employing 160 workers.
