Playing in front of a nearly full house at Lefty Hamilton Park in Williamson’s Annual “Hall of Fame Game”, the current Williamson Wolfpack football team played intense football and came away with a 42 - 7 home-opening win.
The Wolfpack rushed for 169 total yards and ‘Pack quarterback Chuckie White was 3 for 4 with 98 yards passing and two touchdown throws for the night to lead the ‘Pack to victory.
Chris Hatcher proved to be a workhorse for the Wolfpack with 12 carries for 63 yards and two touchdowns, plus going 6 for 6 in extra-point kick attempts.
Matt Wellman had six carries for 28 yards as well for the ‘pack.
The Wolfpack defense was relentless holding the Panthers from Virginia to negative total yards on offense.
The scoring got underway early for the Wolfpack as senior defensive end Bobby Hurley intercepted a pass attempt by Twin Rivers on their first possession of the ball game and took it in for a touchdown. After the extra-point, that made it 7- 0 Wolfpack.
After a three and out by Twin Rivers, Nick Turner then took the punt return back 42 yards for another Wolfpack score before the offense even got on the field.
A Chuckie White touchdown pass to Chris Hatcher a few moments later made the score 21 to 0.
The second quarter was no different as interceptions by Jordan Cisco and Jarrid McCormick stymied the Panther offense and saw the Pack score two more touchdowns by Hatcher on the ground to make the halftime score 35 to 0.
In the second half, the ‘Pack got one score in the third period to make it 42 - 0. Twin Rivers scored in the final four minutes of the game to make it 42 - 7 and avoid the shut-out.
“We played tonight like Williamson teams have historically played.” said Wolfpack Head Football Coach C. Douglas Ward. “We took advantage of their mistakes, added that to our own effort and it paid off. That’s what a good football team is supposed to do.”
