WILLIAMSON - The prep football schedule takes an odd turn tonight as three Mingo County teams take on teams from Virginia and Tug Valley crosses the Tug River to battle yet another Kentucky foe. This rare coincidence of scheduling should make for some good football.

Also, tonight kicks off the annual Williamson High School Hall of Fame weekend with the Hall of Fam e Game tonight at Lefty Hamilton Park in West Williamson. Tomorrow will be the annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony at the Mountaineer Hotel.

TWIN VALLEY (Va.) vs. WILLIAMSON

After a tough trip to Meadow Bridge last week, Coach C. Douglas Ward and his Wolfpack return to the friendly confines of Lefty Hamilton Park to take on Virginia’s Twin Valley High in their annual Williamson Hall of Fame Game, a game marked to honor the Hall of Famers of the school’sa athletic hall of fame.

Twin Valley is a Virginia. consolidated high school who by every account from the folks in the know in their home state boasts a tough football team that is on the verge of becoming a powerhouse. Known for their big pressure defense and tough running attack, expect the visitors to try a few different looks offensively against Coach Award and his crew.

The Wolfpack are still suffering from seom minor executon mistakes and need to get odd the ball very quickly against Twin Valley. Word out of the Wolfpack camp is that practice was a ltttle intense this week as they attempt to get win one of the season.

GRUNDY, Va.

vs MATEWAN

This game should prove to be the most physical and perhaps the most high scoring contest of the evening.

Both Matewan and Grundy come into this one with solid defenses and both prepared to play old-fashioned smash-moiuth football.

Matewan has simply been dominating in their first contests this season and look to be the same in this one. No team has been able to solve their defensive pressure and that’s allowed their offense to have plenty of time and opportunity to score.

Grundy comes in with a big looking offesne line tailored to an offense that traditionally likes to run out of the wishbone a lot. That’s where the rubber hits the road in this one - can Grundy’s offensive line control the line of scrimmage or will Matewan’s defensive line stop their running game cold in it’s tracks?

If Grundy can’t solve Matewan’s defense, it will be a long night for the visitors from Virginia.

HURLEY, Va.

vs BURCH

Talk about motivation.

The Burch Bulldogs are still celebrating their first win in four years last week and the end of a state long 31 game losing streak.

Coach James Joplin and his charges were fired up both during and after their win last week against Phelps and promise to show the same intensity this week in the ‘Dogs third straight home contest this season.

Their opponents though are no slouches in Hurley High School from Virginia. The Rebels impressed everyone on this side of the border earlier this season in the Williamson Grid-A-Rama. The Rebels have quietly, yet solidly built a powerhouse team that got really good faster than anyone thought they would. This team uses a big muscular defense and a fairly decent option offense to keep opponents guessing as to their next move.

This one shuld be a good one. But make no mistake about it. For Burch to win this one, they’re going to have to strike quickly and keep their offense on the field as long as possible. If they do, win two is a possibility.

BELFRY vs.

LETCHER CENTRAL

This game puts BElfry back on the road after last week’s surprise upset by Ashland Paul Blazer at the CAM. They travel to take on a tough Letcher Central team inthis battle of two Eastern Kentucky Coaching Legends in Belfry’s Phillip Haywood and Letcher’s Hilliard Howard.

This isn’t the first time these two have met on opposing sidelines as coaches but never has Belfry had so much to prove in a game than they do tonight.

The Kentucky sports media have been amazed by Belfry’s 1-2 start and Belfry needs a big win tonight to start righting this Pirate ship.

As always, Letcher will be tough. This one will be tough all night long with the winner likely not decided until the last frame. If you’re an East Kentucky football fan, you have to be at this one.

TUG VALLEY vs.

PIKE CENTRAL

There are all kinds of side stories to this one tonight as Coach Josh Duty takes his young Panthers across the Tug River to play against some young and aggressive Pike Central Hawks.

This one will be a battle betwen two teams with new coaches and a slew of new players on each sideline battling it out in the early stages of program rebuilding.

Both feature the run and both have a lot to improve on defesne.

The biggest side note in this game is that the Panthers will be facing on the other sideline tonight their mentor from the last two years, former Panthe Head Coach and current Pike Central Head Coach Mike Smith. Some say that Smith knows Tug Valley too well and knows exactly what they will do. But Coac Josh Duty says that the Panthers will have a few surprises in store for anyone who thinks that this is last year’s Panther team. Should be a good night of football at Hawks Stadium.
