An Elkhorn City man was killed last night at Draffin in an accident involving a dirt bike.
Kentucky State Police Post 9 reported getting a call around 8:33 p.m., Sept. 2, of an accident involving injuries on U.S. 460 in Pike County. Stephen Balo was traveling eastbound on Ky. Route 460 at Draffin when the dirt bike he was driving struck a 1996 Chevy Beretta driven by Deborah Ratliff of Pond Creek as she was making a turn in the westbound lane, the release said. Ratliff was not injured in the accident.
Balo then collided with a 2003 Pontiac van driven by Elva Norman of East Shelbiana Road. Two passengers from the Norman vehicle were treated and released for minor injuries. Balo and his passenger, 22-year-old Eric Hatfield of Elkhorn City, were both ejected from the dirt bike.
Balo was airlifted by Wings aeromedical to Johnson City Memorial Hospital and Hatfield was pronounced dead on the scene by Pike County Deputy Coroner Denver Bailey. Next of kin was notified.
The accident is being investigated by Tpr. Jamie Rose. He was assisted on scene by Sgt. Randy Woods, Tpr. Jerry Perkins, Tpr. Jim Anderson, Elkhorn City Ambulance, and Ferrells Creek Fire Department.
