U.S. 23 wreck kills Pike man

Kentucky State Police Post 9 reported 70-year-old Floyd Chaney of Red Creek, Ky., and a female passenger attempted to enter onto U.S. 23 north from Douglas Drive in front of Shelby Valley High School when Chaney pulled into the path of a northbound vehicle drive by Marigo Werner of Pikeville, Ky.

Chaney, Werner and her infant occupant were transported via ambulance to a local hospital where Chaney later succumbed to his injuries, Post 9 reported. Werner and the infant are both in stable condition.

A female occupant in the vehicle driven by Chaney, Madonna Chaney, was airlifted to Cabell-Huntington Hospital where she is listed in serious condition.

The collision is under investigation by KSP accident reconstructionist Eddie Crum.

Assisting at the scene were Sgt. Darren Stapleton, Commercial Vehicle Enforcement officers, DHP Ambulance Service, Shelby Valley Fire Department, District 12 highway department, and air methods by Ky. Aeromedical.
