The Pike County Jail Farm is an initiative created by the Pike County Fiscal Court and the Pike County Detention Center to reduce food costs associated with the Detention Center and the Pike County Senior Citizens Program. In less than one year, the amount of money the county has saved by creating the farm has paid for the cost to create it.
PIKEVILLE, Ky. – Pike County Judge/Executive Wayne T. Rutherford traveled to Nashville, Tenn., this weekend to accept five achievement awards given to Pike County by the National Association of Counties. Pike County, America’s Energy Capital, received awards for the programs “Pike County Veterans Hall of Honor,” “Pike County Energy Strategy,” “Pike County Human Resource Interagency Coalition,” “Pike County Jail Farm,”and the “2008 Pike County Remote Area Medical Expedition.”
All the aforementioned programs were deemed “an effective and innovative program which contributes to and enhances county government in the United States.”
The National Association of Counties is represents county governments in the United States. Founded in 1935, the National Association of Counties provides essential services to more than 2,000 counties throughout the nation, representing 80 percent of the country’s population.
Keynote speaker for the event is Steve Wrigley, Director of the Carl Vinson Institute of Government at the University of Georgia.
Pike was the only county in Kentucky to receive any awards.
