The Belfry (Ky.) Middle School was forced to end its spring semester early because of widespread flooding in the area. BELFRY, KY - Belfry Middle School will open on time despite major repairs and renovations done after flood damage closed the school early last Spring.
Principal James Hurley said the building will be ready on the first day of school for Pike County students, Aug. 12.
“We will be ready for our students,” Hurley said.
Codell Construction Management Project Manager Jim Martin was at the school Tuesday, and said that although some of the work will not be completed by the time school opens, but that repairs will not disturb classes.
“We don’t intend any disruption of classes,” Martin said. “We will work after school in the evenings and on weekends.”
Martin went on to explain that the work to BMS, as well as to John’s Creek Elementary, is termed as and ‘emergency job’. Codell is doing complete finishes on the floors, walls and ceilings, such as tiles and painting. A new heating and cooling system is also being installed.
“The air conditioning will be installed before the start of the term,” Martin said. “The heating will be operational by the this fall.”
There are also doing mitigation work, which includes drainage and a floodwall behind the building.
Codell is also installing an elevator and some other fixtures to make the school handicap accessible. That work will be done after the first of the year.
