He was born April 6, 1941 at Octavia, Ky., the son of the late Lawrence and Diedema Slone Owens. He was also preceded in death by his step-mother, Slyvania Thacker Owens, his first wife, Jeanette Varney Owens and four brothers, Jesse, Johnny, Henry and his twin brother, Troy Owens and one sister, Kathy OwensHe was a disabled coal miner, a member of Stone Chapter #533 Order of the Eastern Star and Stone Lodge #890 F. & A. M. and a member of the Calvary Primitive Baptist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Jenny Holley Owens; son, John Lester (Brittany) Owens of Canada, Ky.; daughter, Royetta (Robert) Parks of Canada, Ky.; step son, Shade Chaffin of Louisa, Ky.; step daughter, JoAnn Hoose of Richmond, Ky.; three grandsons, John Eric Owens, Payton Roy Allen Owens and Joseph DeWayne Parks all of Canada, Ky.; two step granddaughters, Breanna and Victoria Hoose of Richmond, Ky.; four sisters, Lydia (Doug) Stiltner of Midway, Ohio, Ivalene (Howard) Robinette of McAndrews, Ky., Lola Maxie (Sherman) Hatfield of Elkhorn City, Ky. and Emma Louise (Willie) Goble of Warren, Ind.; two brothers, Lawrence Edward (Sue) Owens of Rittman, Ohio and Kelly (Trish) Owens of Sevierville, Tenn.
Funeral services will be 1 p.m., Friday, July 24, 2009 at the Calvary Primitive Baptist Church, Kimper, Ky., with David Allen Thacker officiating. Burial will follow in the Varney Branch Cemetery, Kimper, Ky. Visitation will be held after 6 p.m., Wednesday and Thursday at the Church with Eastern Star Services 7 p.m., Wednesday with church services to follow and Masonic Services 7 p.m., Thursday with church services to follow. Pall-bearers will be Grandsons, Eric Owens and Joseph Parks, Step-son, Shade Chaffin, friend, Chaz Kulik and nephews, Pernell Turnmire, Chester Turn-mire, Leon Varney, Steve Varney, Gordon Varney and Barry Varney.
