A boil water advisory has been issued for residents in the Matewan area, according to the Matewan Water Department.

Water supplies for the communities between the Matewan HIgh School and Sprigg were contaminated Wednesday when a section of pipe burst near the high school. The pipeline was repaired, however, water department officials are expecting the boil water advisory to be in effect until the end of the week.

According to the water department, a boil water advisory means that water from the tap should used for drinking, cooking, personal hygiene or laundry unilt it is first boiled for one minute.
