Matewan’s Slone named WV second team All-State in Class A TVHS’s Varney, WHS’s McCormick, MHS’s Whitt get honorable mentions

MATEWAN - Mingo County has been well represented on the 2009 West Virginia All - State High School Baseball Team with four county players being honored with various recognitions by the West Virginia State Sports Writers Association.

Roger Slone of Matewan was selected as a utility player on the second team Class A All-State team.

Being recognized as a special honorable mention recipient on this year’s team is outfielder Max Whitt, also from Matewan.

Williamson High School’s Jarrid McCormick was also named to the All-State team as a special honorable mention recipient by the state sportswriters.

Tug Valley High School’s Cody Varney made the Panther baseball club’s return to the Class AA ranks by being named to the West Virginia Class AA All-State Team as an honorable mention recognition recipient. Varney was named to the team as a utility player.

In neighboring Logan County, the state Class A State Championship runner -up Man saw the Hillbillies’ Travis Hurley named to the West Virginia Class A First Team All-State team. Hurley was named to the team as a utility player by the West Virginia Sports Writers Association.

Man also had Cody Harvey named to the team as a special honorable mention recipient as a pitcher and Evan Riggins, who was named as an honorable mention recipient. Also Jordan Simpson was named as a pitcher and Duke Vance as a utility man to the list of honorable mention recipients.

Logan High School was well represented on the Class AAA All-State team as both infielder Ross Easterling and utility player Jordan Butcher were both named Second Team All-State.

Logan pitcher Todd Fleming was accorded Class AAA Honorable Mention recognition and Logan infielder Timmy Rein and outfielder Josh Wilson were named as honorable mention recipients to the team.

Pitcher Caleb Toparis, utilityman Jordan Banks of the Chapmanville Tigers were named to the Class AA team as special honorable mention players. The Tigers Zack Gresham was named as an infielder to the special honorable mention list.

From Wayne County, Cody Duvall of Tolsia was named to the Class AA team as a honorable mention utility man.

From McDowell County, Big Creek's Shane Hicks was named as Class A Honorable Mention as a catcher and Iaegar’s Jeff Johnson was named Class A Honorable mention as an outfielder. Also Mount View’s Tyler Morsi was named to the Class AA team as an honoraable recognition infielder.
