CHARLESTON (AP) — Massey Energy chief Don Blankenship is challenging NASA scientist James Hansen to debate global warming and West Virginia’s economy.

Blankenship issued the challenge Friday to Hansen, director of NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies at Columbia University.

Environmentalist organization Mountain Justice says Hansen, actress Daryl Hannah and others will trespass at a Massey operation in Raleigh County to protest surface mining Tuesday.

Blankenship says a professor such as Hansen should value dialogue over publicity-seeking arrests that divert police from preventing crime and endanger miners and others.

Hansen did not immediately respond to a phone message.

Massey, which operates in West Virginia, Virginia and Kentucky, is the fourth-largest U.S. coal producer by revenue.
