If you want to enjoy the great outdoors with the great summer weather, and you want a solid vacation value, consider spending time close to home. West Virginia offers something for everyone: a long family vacation, a quick getaway with a group of friends, or the chance to take a road trip without the hassle of traffic.
A West Virginia vacation isn’t attractive just because it’s in close proximity and because it requires less fuel - it’s an excellent destination with ample opportunities hosted by friendly West Virginians. Take a trip in which you can learn about our state’s heritage at historic locations such as Harpers Ferry or the newly renovated West Virginia State Museum.
This year marks the 150th anniversary of the John Brown Raid at Harpers Ferry. The John Brown Raid Sesquicenten-nial is being commemorated with reenactments, dramatic productions, art exhibits, academic lectures and walking tours, now through December.
The West Virginia State Museum, located at The Culture Center at the State Capitol, is a world-class museum that has been completely and professionally redesigned. Its grand opening is June 20, which is the state’s 146th birthday.
Of course, West Virginia is renowned for its vast outdoor recreation opportunities. From hiking to boating and fishing to mountain-biking, there’s an activity that is sure to keep kids and parents entertained. One of my favorite summer activities is fly fishing for trout in one of the hundreds of our mountain streams. It’s great fun for kids as well and gives you an opportunity to experience the best of West Virginia’s outdoors.
