Now that the beginning of the traditional summer travel and vacation season is upon us, the Mountain State has yet another opportunity to welcome thousands of tourists who are looking for a place to explore and enjoy. Regard-less of what other states have to offer, we have one aspect of this great state that we will continue to tout, which is our scenic attractions. The tourism destinations here are memorable, enriching and affordable.

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the John Brown Raid at Harpers Ferry. The John Brown Raid Sesquicenten-nial is being commemorated with reenactments, dramatic productions, art exhibits, academic lectures and walking tours, now through December.

The West Virginia State Museum, located at The Culture Center at the State Capitol, is a world-class museum that has been completely and professionally redesigned. Its grand opening is June 20, which is the state’s 146th birthday.

Of course, West Virginia is renowned for its vast outdoor recreation opportunities. From hiking to boating and fishing to mountain-biking, there’s an activity that is sure to keep kids and parents entertained. One of my favorite summer activities is fly fishing for trout in one of the hundreds of our mountain streams. It’s great fun for kids as well and gives you an opportunity to experience the best of West Virginia’s outdoors.
