HARLAN, Ky. (AP) — A longtime eastern Ken-tucky coal miner has died after being crushed in an underground accident.

U.S. Mine Safety and Health Administration spo-keswoman Amy Lou-viere said 58-year-old Wil-son R. Meade died Tuesday after being struck by a trailer loaded with concrete block. Louviere said an investigation continues at the small D&C Mining Corp. mine in Harlan County.

State officials say Meade, of Smith, was a foreman with 40 years of mining experience.

Ricki Gardenhire, a spokeswoman for the Ken-tucky Energy and Enviro-nment Cabinet, said it was the second coal fatality in the state this year. A surface mine reported a fatality in May.

Louviere said it was the seventh mining fatality of the year in the United States and the first underground coal mine fatality in 233 days.
