MORGANTOWN (AP) — A Clarksburg handyman who claimed to have killed five people before committing suicide this week had placed singles ads in a local newspaper twice in the past year, police said Thursday.

James Childers, 45, advertised for female companionship in August 2008 and again in Jan-uary, though Lt. Robert Matheny said it”s unclear whether he got any responses. Authorities did not say whether Childers may have used the ads to meet potential victims.

Police have received at least 100 calls from people who knew the friendly and outgoing 45-year-old in various ways, Matheny said. Each helps investigators learn about the man they had planned to arrest Tuesday on murder and arson char-ges.

Childers mailed police a package of handwritten notes and a two-hour audiotape that led them to a set of skeletal remains in Barbour County and the body of a white woman in her 40s near Copen in Braxton County.

Neither victim has been identified, and no other bodies have been found.

The package, in which police say Childers claimed to be involved in four ar-sons and five homicides, is being turned over to the FBI for further analysis.

Matheny said authorities are ooking for forensic evidence in four vehicles Chil-ders had.

Police and arson investigators also removed items Thursday from his” former residence on North-cott Street, which he admitted torching. Matheny would not say what the items were.
