CHARLESTON (AP) — Federal prosecutors have obtained updated charges against two West Virginia residents in a case that involves the death penalty.

A U.S. District Court grand jury re-indicted George Lecco and Valerie Suzette Friend on charges stemming from the 2005 murder of a drug informant.

Filed Wednesday, the new set of charges differ slightly from the previous one. But its most serious counts continue to carry the death penalty.

Prosecutors say Lecco had Friend kill Carla Collins to protect their Mingo County cocaine ring.

The two were convicted in 2007 of all charges in the earlier indictment. A judge recently ordered a new trial because of a juror’s misconduct.

West Virginia abolished capital punishment for state crimes. It remains an option in federal cases.
