CHARLESTON - A Williamson man struck by a train at Chattaroy Saturday and transported by the West Virginia National Guard in a helicopter to a Charleston hospital, was listed in critical condition Tuesday.

The man, identified as Jonathan “Bo” Cook, 27, was found lying injured along the Norfolk Southern railroad tracks shortly after a westbound train had passed through the area.

Cook reportedly was a pedestrian and survived being struck by the train but suffered the partial loss of an arm and head injuries, according to an authoritative source.

Members of the West Virginia National Guard flew Cook in a Black Hawk helicopter Saturday afternoon to the Charleston Area Medical Center where his condition was he was reported as unresponsive at the time.

The helicopter was too heavy to land on the roof of CAMC General Hospital, so the patient had to be transported by an ambulance from the airport to the hospital. The Guard members picked the man up on four-lane U.S. !19 in the Chattaroy area where the helicopter landed.

The National Guard members have been in Mingo County assisting with the recovery from recent devastating flooding in part of the county. Jeff Carter, shift commander at the Kanawha County Ambulance Authority, was quoted that “They happened to be in the right place at the right time.”

Norfolk Southern railroad police and TFC R.G.

Flippen of the William-son detachment, West Virginia State Police, have been investigating the accident but have not come to any conclusion as to how it happened. There was no evidence to indicate if the man fell against the train or was struck by it as it passed.

The accident is said to have occurred around 3: 10 p.m. Saturday. A crew from the Mingo County Ambu-lance Service went to the scene in response to a call about the mishap.

Jeff Carter, shift commander at the Kanawha County Ambulance Auth-ority, said his ambulance crew, after transporting the injured man from the airport to the hospital, had to leave the hospital a short time later because of another emergency call.

Carter said a serious motorcycle accident oc--curred in the Sissonville area and that two persons were reported in critical condition from injuries.
