AFLEX, KY - They’ve done it again.

Those Mad4MU guys presented the Marshall University Big Green Scholarship Foundation with a $55,000 check, which tops the $47,500 the Mingo group raised for the Thundering Herd student athletes one year ago.

The funds in most part came from the “Thunder in the Valley” Saturday (May 16) dinner and Tuesday (May 19) golf outing. The Mingo Athletic Delegation 4 Marshall University has been a long-time Big Green Chapter.

“It’s amazing,” said Big Green Executive Director John Sutherland, “how the Marshall family in Mingo County has come through for the Herd year after year. Don Blankenship, David Akers, Ralph Hagy and Rod Smith have put together a team that has done so much for our student athletes at Marshall and we are so grateful.”

The Saturday dinner and auction at the Massey Cabin in Aflex, Ky. drew nearly 200 persons who all became Big Green members through their dinner donations. Miami Dolphins quarterback Chad Pennington, former Herd great, was the main speaker at the dinner.

Other speakers from MU were President Stephen Kopp, head football coach Mark Snyder, men’s head basketball coach Donnie Jones. Also addressing the crowd was former Herd play Jason Rader, who now plays for the Atlanta Falcons, and David Jones of Red Jacket, former Matewan High gridder who recently signed with the Baltimore Ravens after a stellar college career at the University of Kentucky.
