“We want to reassure residents affected by the flooding that county officials are working arm in arm with the National Guard to repair our county,” said OES Director Jarrod Fletcher. “The Guard will be here as long as we need them.”
Debris removal efforts by the Guard have been temporarily suspended while they assist in rock hauling for road repairs. Debris removal by the Guard will not begin again before Saturday.
Residents contacting the Federal Emergency Manage-ment Agency (FEMA) need to have the following information at hand:
• Social Security Number (including spouse)
• Private insurance information, if available
• Address and zip code of the damaged property
• Directions to the damaged home or property
• Daytime telephone number
Residents must call FEMA’s toll free number and register before visiting a disaster relief office. The numbers to call are 1 (800) 621-FEMA (3362) and TTY 1 (800) 462-7585. Registration is also available online at www.fema.gov (click “apply” for assistance).
In addition to FEMA representatives being available to assist residents in the recovery process, officials from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) have also set up offices to offer assistance. While the SBA does offer assistance to business owners affected by the events of May 9, non-business owners may also be eligible for assistance through the agency.
Carl W. Sherrill, SBA communications specialist, explained that when residents register with FEMA, they will also receive an SBA application. He encourages everyone who receives an SBA application to submit it.
Types of assistance available through the SBA include: home disaster loans; business physical disaster loans and economic injury disaster loans (EIDL). EIDL assistance is available only to entities and their owners who cannot provide for their own recovery from non-government sources, as determined by the SBA.
The deadline for SBA applications is July 14. For more information, call 1 (800) ASK-SBA or 1 (800) 659-2955 or visit www.sba.gov/disasterassistance.
