WILLIAMSON — Heavy rainfall that swelled Tug River and other streams and caused widespread flooding in southeern West Virginia has resulted in the suspension of Mingo County Circuit Court activity until further notice.

The office of Chief Judge Michael Thornsbury confirmed that both criminal and civil cases will be on hold until later since the flood devastation and cleanup are of all importance at this time.

Plaintiffs who rejected offers in settlement of claims that a Massey Energy subsidiary contaminated their water supply in the community of Rawl were scheduled to be in Mingo County Circuit Court Tuesday as trial was to get underway in connection with the suits seeking alleged damages.

A spokesperson in the judge’s offices said Judge Thornsbury was in the Gilbert area Tuesday, helping with flood recovery work in that section that was hardhit by flooding. Thornsbury has worked in devastated areas on various occasions during the past few years he has served as circuit judge.
