CHARLESTON — More than 300 aspiring writers were honored Friday during the 2009 Young Writers Celebration Day at the University of Charleston, including a Matewan High student who took state honors in the 11th and 12th grade division.

The annual statewide competition recognizes and encourages writing excellence from kindergarten to high school.

“Writing is one of the most important skills for academic and professional success,” West Virginia Superintendent of Schools Steve Paine said. “As we prepare students for the 21st century, clear communication through writing is more important than ever.”

While all county winners of the contest were honored yesterday, six were chosen as the state's best writers. Matewan High School's Kristen Epling won the 11th and 12th grade division with her entry called "Learning to Fly." Epling is a 12th grade student in Bridgett Call's class, and is the daughter of Gerald and Linda Epling of Matewan.

The day’s events also include the awarding of a $750 Barbara W. Walters Scholarship to a high school senior as well as recognition of county and state winners. Mingo County had six county winners (see list with story).

The other state winners are: Grades 1-2, Rachel Cogar, Gihon Elementary, Wood County; Grades 3-4 Taylor Griffith, Madison School, Boone County; Grades 5-6, Andrew Bohman, Buckhannon-Upshur Middle, Upshur County; Grades 7-8, Shelby Anderson, Tucker Valley Elementary Middle, Tucker County; and Grades 9-10, Connie Callison, Meadow Bridge High, Fayette County..

The Young Writers Contest is sponsored by the West Virginia Department of Education, Marshall University Graduate College, the University of Charleston and the Charleston Daily Mail.
