These men and women deserve our gratitude every day because they make it possible for us to continue to live in the greatest country in the world and enjoy the many freedoms that were the driving force in declaring an independent nation.
Our military — Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, National Guard and Reserves — ensure that we have the freedoms denied to so many around the world. These freedoms, which we so often take for granted, give each of us a voice; allow us to think for ourselves and make our own choices; permit us to assemble for any cause or purpose; allow us to worship the god of our choosing and to practice the religion of our individual beliefs, and afford us the opportunity to express our ideas, all without fear of persecution. Our military allows us the privilege of having freedom from fear.
From our country’s forefathers, who bravely fought for our independence, to the men and women who are currently fighting in the war on terrorism, our military men and women are dedicated to the prospect of preserving our freedoms and our way of life; protecting our country and those who are unable to protect themselves; standing up for what is true and right, and coming to the aid of citizens in crisis.
During winter storms, tornados, flooding and other catastrophes, we have been fortunate to have have had the National Guard and Army Reserve in Johnson, Martin and Pike counties and other affected communities throughout the state to help ensure that all our citizens were not in imminent danger or in need of medical attention, food, water or heat.
It goes without saying that we should ALWAYS honor and recognize our military men and women. They leave their families and their homes — often going overseas — and put their lives at risk to serve and protect our country.
Each of the men and women who put on the uniforms of their particular military branch of service and take up arms for our cause are my heroes and deserve respect and gratitude everyday. We may not express these feelings on a daily basis, so National Military Appreciation Month reminds us that we should say, “Thank you. We are grateful that you serve and protect our country.”
During May, I hope that we all will be more attentive to our military and show our appreciation. Letters and care packages sent to our men and women serving overseas or in other parts of the country will be warmly received. A simple “thank you for what you do (or have done)” to a member of the military or to a veteran comes at no expense or time, but will show them that we do care and we are grateful. And, always, we should educate our children on the important role of our military and teach them to revere and respect our men and women in uniform.
I feel fortunate to live in this great country and am indebted to those who protect us, our freedoms and our country.
God bless the U.S.A. and God bless the men and women who serve our country.
Senator Ray Jones represents Johnson, Martin and Pike counties.
