NEW HAVEN, (AP) — Appalachian Power Co. has received the first carbon dioxide sequestration permit issued in West Virginia.

Gov. Joe Manchin says the Department of Environmental Protection issued the permit Monday for a pilot project at the utility’s Mountaineer Plant in New Haven.

The $70 million project is designed to capture carbon dioxide from the plant’s emissions and store it underground.

American Electric Power Chairman Michael Morris says the project is expected to be operational in September. American Electric Power is the parent of Appalachian Power.
