PIKEVILLE, Ky. (AP) — An eastern Kentucky sheriff’s deputy has pleaded not guilty to a rape charge stemming from allegations of an assault during a traffic stop.

Kentucky State Police say Pike County sheriff’s Deputy William “Bill” Hatfield was arrested after a woman reported that she was sexually assaulted during a traffic stop just off U.S. 119 Thursday night.

The 52-year-old Hatfield made his initial court appearance Friday in Pike County District Court.

Hatfield was being held in the Pike County Detention Center on $10,000 bond.

Sheriff Charles “Fuzzy” Keesee says Hatfield has been placed on unpaid suspension. He says Hatfield has been a deputy for about seven years.

Keesee says his office is cooperating with the state police investigation.
