MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Maybe the NFL Draft isn't so complicated after all.
After months of speculation about Pat White, who would select him and where they'd use him, the former West Virginia quarterback landed with the team he was connected to first.
The Miami Dolphins, who ushered in the Wildcat formation last season with great success, picked the NCAA's all-time leading rusher among quarterbacks with the 12th pick in the second round (No. 44 overall) Saturday.
"I am excited to see how they can utilize my talent," White said. "They have a lot of great players in Miami, from wide out to running back, but I just want to get out there and win games."
The Wildcat, which has been mimicked across the league, works best with a quarterback who can pose a running and throwing threat, which is a rarity in the NFL. The Dolphins used running back Ronnie Brown at quarterback and kept quarterback Chad Pennington on the field as a receiver.
White adds a new dynamic.
"I have heard a lot about the Wildcat and I am happy to be a part of it," said White, who ran for 4,325 yards and 47 touchdowns and passed for 5,576 yards and 52 touchdowns with the Mountaineers. "I can play multiple positions, so I'll see where I end up. I'm ready for anything."
What he'll see in the Wildcat may look familiar.
"It reminded me of West Virginia a little bit, when the defense goes one way and you shoot someone out the other way," he said. "It keeps the defense on its toes."
White was one of three WVU players drafted. The Buffalo Bills picked cornerback Ellis Lankster with the 11th pick in the seventh and final round Sunday. Kicker/punter Pat McAfee went two spots later at No. 222 overall to the Indianapolis Colts.
The Dolphins offer White additional liberties beyond the Wildcat. Skeptics questioned White's ability to play quarterback in the NFL, learn to play receiver and contribute as a punt and kick returner.
White was a coveted prospect and his profile soared as the draft approached.
