INEZ, Ky. – Martin County Sheriff’s officers charged a teen-age youth Tuesday with second degree assault of a girl aboard a county school bus and charged a Pilgrim, Ky., man with criminal trespass Wednesday after he was found hiding in a housing complex.

Lt. Brian Tipton took Johnny M. Jones, 18, of Lovely, Ky., into custody on a charge of second degree assault on a 17-year-old girl. The incident occurred at about 8:45 a.m. Tuesday.

His report said Jones and the unidentified victim were riding on the bus which serves Sheldon Clark High School on Ky. Route 40. The two were reported to be “horse playing” when Jones allegedly slapped the girl twice in the face. The victim retaliated with slaps to Jones and the latter, according to Tipton’s report, struck the girl twice more, causing swelling on the right side of her face and her mouth to begin bleeding.

Tipton noted that the victim is 17 years old and one-third the size of her alleged attacker, who is listed in the police report as being 6 feet tall and weighing 300 pounds. He said the bus driver witnessed what had taken place and that photos had been made of the victim.

The Daily News was unable to ascertain if the two involved in the incident are students at the high school. The investigating officer was off duty Thursday and a school official did not return a phone call to the Daily News.

Deputy Dwayne Crum investigated the incident involving Jeremy D. Harmon, 38, of Emily Creek Road at Lovely, and charged the man with criminal trespassing, third degree.

Crum’s report said Harmon was found hiding in an upstairs closet in Apartment 23 occupied by his aunt, Rhonda Mounts, in Dempsey Housing at Hode, Ky. The report said officers received information to the effect that Harmon was in the apartment, noting that the man is currently barred from entering or remaining on Dempsey Housing property because of a prior violation of rules. The officer’s report said Harmon is aware he was barred from the property.

Officers, including Crum, knocked on the apartment door and Ms. Mounts answered the knock. She stated multiple times that her nephew was not in ther apartment, the sheriff’s report said. She invited officers to look through her apartment to confirm that Jeremy was not there.

“I found Jeremy hiding in an upstairs closet,” Crum reported. “He stated he is aware he isn’t supposed to be on the property but is trying to get electricity hooked up to a place where he will be living.”

Crum noted that he also served a bench warrant on Harmon for “failure to appear in Circuit Court for a hearing to set aside pretrial diversion.”

Lt. Tipton also reported the arrest of Donvan L. Hall, 31, of Hidden Valley Road, Paintsville, Ky., on Tuesday when he served a bench warrant on a charge of failing to have a prescription controlled substance in a proper container (first offense). The deputy had no further information on this case. The warrant was executed on Court Street in Inez.
