Healthnet was contacted and landed a helicopter at the site of the accident. The chopper transported Dentro to Williamson Memorial Hospital where officials say she passed away before being taken to St. Mary’s Hospital in Huntington.
Lead investigator Mingo County Sheriff's Department Sgt. James Muncy said the driver for Hanover Wrecker Service Terry Yates had pulled the wrecker he was operating to the side of the four-lane to use his cell phone.
Police say Dentro was traveling southbound on U.S. 119 in a Volkswagen Beetle when she ran into the rear of the stationary vehicle. Muncy said the jaws-of-life had to be used during the rescue attempt.
Officials say it appeared Dentro suffered from severe head trauma. Yates was taken to South Williamson Appalachian Regional Hospital complaining of back pain.
The accident occurred around 12 p.m. and held up traffic in both north and southbound lanes.
Responding to the scene along with Sgt. Muncy was Cpl. Norman Mines, the Williamson Fire Department as well as the Chattaroy Fire Department and STAT Ambulance.
