“Thunder in the Valley” is this year’s theme for the second annual MAD4MU Celebration,

The Mingo Athletic Delegation for Marshall University will hold the banquet and auction May 16 at the Massey energy cabin at Burnwell, Ky. Don Blankenship will serve as host for the event.

Special guest is Miami Dolphins’ quarterback Chad Pennington. The Dolphins’ QB earned the 2008 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. He also won the award in 2006.

Pennington was born June 26, 1976 in Knoxville, Tenn. He was drafted by the New York Jets during the 2000 NFL Draft. Pennington played college football at Marshall University. In 2008, he finished second in MVP voting to Peyton Manning. He is also statistically the most accurate quarterback in NFL history with a career completion percentage of 66 percent.

Also expected to speak is Red Dawson. Dawson endured a catastrophic event in 1970 when the plane transporting members of the 1970 Marshall football team and staff crashed, killing everyone on board.

Dawson was supposed to have been on that plane, but gave up his seat to visit a recruit to work out a few details following the East Carolina road game.

Marshall hired Dawson in 1968 where he continued coaching until 1971, the year following the plane crash. He retired one year after the crash and still lives in Huntington.

St. Albans native and Atlanta Falcons tight end Jason Rader will speak as well. He was signed by the Atlanta Falcons as an undrafted free agent in 2004 and played college football at Marshall.

Expected to show is WVU grad Kay-Jay Harris. He is currently in his third year in the NFL and plays running back for the New York Giants.
