South Williamson, KY — Pike County Judge/Executive Wayne T. Rutherford traveled to South Williamson on Monday, April 13, to witness the reinstallation of a recently repaired pumping engine.

The engine was repaired by the Kraft Power Company, the company which originally installed the engine, which is located in Massillon, Ohio. Pike County Public Works Commissioner Frank Hatcher and Pike County Flood plain Coordinator Jimmy Kiser traveled to Massillon on Friday, April 10, to bring the engine back to Pike County.

According to Kiser, the engine is one of two engines used in the pumps which propel storm water inside the South Williamson Floodwall during flooding events. Fortunately, during the weeks that the engine was being serviced, no event took place which called for the use of the pumps. Kiser said the engines are not used very often, but are important nonetheless, because when they are needed, it is during an emergency situation.

“These engines are very important to residents of South Williamson. They power pumps that protect many homes and property from being destroyed when the river gets too high,” said Kiser. “Now both of the engines at the South Williamson Floodwall are working and the pumps have been restored to level of operation that they possessed on the day the pumping station was built,” he added.

“If the waters had gotten up to flood state and the engine was not running, then the people living inside the floodwall would have been flooded. We have avoided that situation. This engine received a major overhaul and is now operating as good as new,” said Frank Hatcher.

Judge Rutherford said he has authorized a study to be conducted to investigate a back up fuel source for the engines. The engines currently run on natural gas that is delivered through a pipeline running from a nearby mountain. At present, if something should happen to the pipeline, there would be no alternative power source for the engines.
