CHARLESTON- The West Virginia Young Democrats along with the West Virginia House of Delegates and Senate have adopted a resolution in support of a “West Virginia Coal Miner Appreciation Day.” The West Virginia Young Democrats Labor Caucus wrote the resolution which was passed by the West Virginia Young Democrats at their annual convention on March 8. The resolution was sent to the House of Delegates where it was introduced by Delegate K. Steve Kominar (D-Mingo). Delegate Kominar was then joined by Speaker Thompson (D-Wayne) and Delegates Boggs, Butcher, Campbell, Eldridge, Fragale, Hall, Klempa, Lawrence, Mahan, Miley, Morgan, Paxton, Perry, Phillips, D. Poling, Ross, Shaver, Skaff, Stephens, Stowers, Swartzmiller, and Varner in sponsoring the resolution. The “West Virginia Coal Miner Appreciation Day” resolution passed the House 97-0 with three not voting. Furthermore, the resolution was passed by the Senate where it will next be forwarded to Governor Joe Manchin.
The newly elected labor caucus chairman, Justin Marcum, of Mingo Count, said the West Virginia Young Democrats will be touring the Beckley Exhibition Coal Mine with Congressman Nick J. Rahall on June 6, 2009. This event is scheduled to start on Friday June 5, 2009 where Marcum will host a Labor Caucus Meeting in Beckley and Chris Hatton, the WVYD 3rd Congressional District Director will host a 3rd Congressional District meeting. Moreover, the West Virginia Young Democrats will meet with Congressman Rahall at 10 a.m. Saturday with the mine tour scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m.
