MATEWAN - The No. 6 ranked Matewan Tigers baseball team finally got to see some action this week after rain and snow played havoc with the local baseball schedule.

The Tigers played host to the Burch Bulldogs and came away with a 12 to 2 win over the ‘Dogs in a game that ended after six innings of play.

The Tigers took an early lead scoring twice in the first and once in the third. Then they exploded for two runs in the fourth and five in the fifth.

Burch scored once each in the fourth and fifth innings, to make the score 9 to 2, but it proved too little to late. Matewan scored three more times in the sixth to come away with the 12 - 2 win.

Nate Anderson was the winning pitcher for Matewan giving up 1 hit, two walks while giving up no runs and striking out two. Zach Runyon was saddled with the loss for the Bulldogs after giving up six hits, five runs and four walks in four innings of work.

Cody Gooslin had three hits, two of them being homers for Matewan. He also drew three walks.

Chaz Clusky had two hits, a single and a double and Jacob Staton had a double for the Tigers.

Runyon was the Bulldogs leading hitter with two hits, a single and a double. Ryan Hatfield had a single.

GILBERT - While field conditions were not pristine, Lions field was in good enough shape for the Gilbert Lions and the Williamson Wolfpack to play yesterday afternoon with the Lions defeating the ‘Pack 10 to 6.

Coach Pedro Ledger’s Wolfpack jumped out to an early lead getting three runs in the second inning and two in the third to lead 5 - 0.

The Lions rallied back however with three runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to tie things up at 5 to 5. They scored again in the sixth inning to take 6 to 5 lead.

But then in the sixth inning, Gilbert batted through the entire line-up and scored four additional runs to put the game away at 10 to 6.

Josh Dingess was the winning pitcher for the Lions going five innings giving up four walks and one earned run while striking out two. Jarrid McCormick was the starter for the pack and went five innings giving up five runs, six hits and two walks. McCormick struck out four.. Nick Lee pitched the fifth inning and gave up four hits, two walks and four runs and was saddled with the loss for the Wolfpack. Israel Varney pitched the sixth but did not figure in the decision.

Hitting-wise, Gilbert’s Ryan Altizer was three for four with 2 RBI and Josh Carte was two for four including a three -run homer in the third for Gilbert. Austin Trent wa two for two,

For Williamson, Jarrid McCormick had a single and RBI for the ‘Pack. Bobby Hurley was one for three with a double and an RBI and Will Hale, Chris Fletcher and Alex Anderson each knocked in one run apiece for the ‘Pack.
