GOODY, KY. - For the 7th straight year, the Belfry Pirates baseball team won the 60th District tournament.
The Pirates defeated local rival Pike County Central 4-1 on Wednesday evening at the Belfry sports complex.
The two teams split their regular season matchups, but Pike Central was the No. 1 seed, therefore the home team, even though the game was played at Belfry’s field.
Belfry only had one hit in the game, but still pulled out the win. The game was scoreless until the 3rd inning.
In the 3rd inning, Pike Central’s Blake Clark led off with a single down the third base line. Then Brad Elkins singled to right field, but Clark was thrown out at third base. Elkins went to second on the throw.
The Hawk’s Mac Justice walked and Elkins went to third base on a passed ball. Elkins then scored on a grounder to shortstop Zack Francisco PC’s by Dylan Wright.
The Pirates got on the scoreboard in the top of the 5th inning. Belfry’s Sean Hurley walked, then he advanced to third base on Caleb Stanley’s sacrifice bunt.
Keaton Taylor singled to right center, which turned out to be the only hit of the game for Belfry.
Then Reed Williamson worked a walk and Hurley scored on Zack Francisco’s walk. Williamson scored on a wild pitch.
Francisco scored Belfry’s next run on a passed ball.
Joey Duty, who had got on base by a fielder’s choice, scored on yet another wild pitch. When the inning was over, Belfry had a 4-1 lead.
Taylor picked up the win on the mound for the Pirates. He only allowed four hits. Mac Justice took the loss on the hill for Belfry.
Both teams will advance to the 15th Regional tournament. The pairings will be announced at a later date. The regional tourney is scheduled to be played at Pike County Central, but they have been installing new sod on their field. There is a possibility the tourney could be played at Belfry.
