Tug Valley gets tricky to beat Cross Lanes
by JEFFREYREYNOLDS SPORTSEDITOR
CROSS LANES – Tug Valley got a little sneaky in their 13-11 win over Cross Lanes Christian.
Tug Valley had the lead heading into the bottom of the 7th inning. Panther hurler Jordon Mounts got one batter to pop up for an out, but walked two batters.
With Cross Lanes threatening, coach Jeff Varney brought in relief pitcher Josh Spry.
That’s when the fun started. The runner on second base was caught in a run-down attempting to steal third base. He was tagged out by second sacker Mikey Newsome. Meanwhile, during the run-down, the Cross Lanes runner on first base made it to second.
However, Newsome kept possession of the ball in his glove and the players went back to their positions. Spry, the Panther pitcher started his stretch to the batter, and then stepped off of the rubber. The runner had taken a lead off at second base. Not knowing that Newsome had the baseball hidden in his glove, was tagged out for the final out of the game.
Cross Lanes, who had beaten Tug Valley in Naugatuck earlier in the season, took a 3-0 lead after one inning of play. The Panthers came back with five runs in the top of the second to take the lead. Tug Valley added three more in the 4th frame and one more run in the 5th.
Cross Lanes then had a big 8-run rally in the bottom of the 5th inning to pull ahead. Tug Valley took the lead with a 4-run rally in the top of the 6th inning.
Mounts got credit for the win on the mound. Only two of the 11 runs were earned by Cross Lanes. Mounts struck out 11 batters and only walked four. Tug Valley made six errors in the contest.
Lee McQuain took the loss on the hill for the home team.
Mounts helped his own cause with three hits including a double and two RBIs. Trevin Horn had a pair of hits, while Tyler Lucas, David Runyon, Newsome, Aaron Muncy and Tyler Estepp each had base hits. Lucas had three RBIs, while Muncy knocked in a pair of runs with a double.
