The Belfry Pirate baseball team has started off to a slow start for the 2013 Season. The Pirates, a team that went 25-9 last season and lost 4 players to graduation in 2012 has picked up the pace towards the ending of the season as they seem to have locked in the #1 seed in the 60th District as they ended regular season district play 3-1. Losing to Pike Central 3-4 in mid April and defeating Phelps twice and Pike Central once.
The Pirates are led by seniors Sean Hurley, Zack Francisco, Eli Huddle, Madison Ghormley and Travis Maynard. These five seniors have been a major help in picking up some “W’s” for the Pirates.
But, we can’t leave out those juniors Joey Duty, Reed Williamson, Zack Fields, Caleb Stanley and Austin Rollins, just to name a few. These guys have stepped up their game to help out the Pirates! The Pirates top pitchers this season would be Joey Duty, Zack Fields and sophomore Keaton Taylor have put up and stepped up at the right time to rally the Pirates back to a win.
We can’t forget about the man behind the team, the one who helps these young men become leaders and teach them the right way to play the game of baseball, that man would just happen to be the head coach for the Pirates, Michael Hagy. Hagy has led teams in past to numerous 60th District Championships and 15th Region Tournament appearences. Hagy, who became the coach to have the most wins in a single season at Belfry in 2012 with 25 wins, makes sure these young men know eeverything from batting to catching. Coach Hagy was a standout baseball player at Williamson High School in Williamson, WV (now consolidated to form Mingo Central High School) and at Marshall University in the early to late 90s.
If you have not been to a Belfry baseball game in the 2013 season, you are surely missing out on very exciting games. Don’t miss your chance to watch the Pirates as they play at home against East Ridge and Allen Central on May 2 and 3 respectively. Also, the 60th District Tournament and 15th Region Tournament is to be played at Belfry High School.
Get out and watch those Pirates.
