Belfry holds on to beat Hillbillies 9-8

MAN – The Belfry Pirates scored five runs in the top of the 7th inning to take a 9-4 lead, but had to hold off a rally by the Man Hillbillies to win the game 9-8.
Man took a 2-0 lead scoring two runs in the 2nd inning. Cody Carter singled to left with one out and then Mike Rose doubled to center field. Carter advanced to third base on the hit. Then both scored on an error by Joey Duty on a ball hit by Man’s for Brian Trent.
The Billies tacked on another run in the 3rd inning when Noah Maynard led off with a double to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly to right fielder Eli Huddle.
Belfry tied the game at 3-3 in the 4th inning. Keaton Taylor walked leading off the inning. Then Duty singled to left field. Then after a double steal, Taylor scored on error by the catcher on his throw to third base. Reed Williamson singled to bring in Duty and Caleb Stanley singled to knock in Williamson.
In the 5th inning Huddle led off with a walk and scored on 2-out single to center by Zack Francisco.
In the 7th inning, Man’s Kenny Jo Adkins led off with walk and went to second base on a wild pitch. He scored on double to center field by John Keffer.
In the 8th inning, with one out, Stanley walked and Cameron Johnson beat out bunt in front of pitcher’s mound. Huddle walked to load bases with two outs and Duty was safe on a fielder’s choice. Huddle was then safe at second on throw by the shortstop. Keilan Carr, who was a courtesy runner for Stanley, scored for Belfry.
Then Duty singled in Johnson, Francisco singled in Huddle and Williamson got a pair of RBIs with a single scoring Duty and Francisco.
Man plated another run in the bottom of the 6th inning. Neil Mullins led off with single to right, Cody Carter singled to right and Brian Trent walked to load the bases.
Mullins scored on 1-out grounder to second base by Trent.
Man had a big rally in a comeback effort in the final frame. Keffer singled to left, scoring two runs for the Hillbillies. Braden Griffin singled to right, scoring Keffer.
Reed Williamson was credited with the win on the mound. Taylor struck out Cayce Mullins on four pitches to end game and got a save for the Pirates.
Belfry is now 8-12 and was slated to play Mingo Central at Lefty Hamilton Park on Wednesday, but the game was rained out. The Pirates are scheduled to play host to Logan, W.Va. today at Massey Energy Field at Goody, Ky.
