BECKLEY - Three Tug Valley seniors played well in the Scott Brown Classic all-star game played at Beckley on Saturday.

The Jan-Care Class AA boys defeated the C. Adam Toney A boys 94-90 in a close contest.

Brett Morris put up 24 points, 18 of which came in the second half. He was named MVP of the game.

The Class A squad was coached by Tug Valley’s Garland “Rabbit” Thompson, who had three of his players on the squad. They were All-Staters and Daily News All-Area members Austin Brewer, Mikey Newsome and Aaron Muncy.

Even though they play for smaller schools, the single-A team showed it belonged on the court. All five starters, including Newsome, Muncy, Brewer, Josh Martin and Mullins finished in double figures. The 6-foot-7 Martin led C. Adam Toney with 21 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocks.

Newsome scored 13 including a pair of 3-pointers, Muncy also had 13 and Brewer 17.

Morris wasn’t the only AA player making a difference. Robert C. Byrd’s Iziah Hill had 20 points and 11 rebounds off the bench.

Brewer also dished out four assists and pulled down 12 rebounds. Newsome had five assists.

The Class AA All-Stars outscored the Class A All-Stars 37-9 off the bench.

It wasn’t all roses for the AA boys. They went into the half trailing 45-40, mostly thanks to Greater Beckley’s Keith Mullins’ 15 first-half points.

He was held to only two points in the second half.

Players from the A-AA and the AAA/national game teams took place in a skills competition.

Princeton Tigers Ryan Meadows defeated Q.J. Peterson for the 3-point shootout championship. Newsome of Tug Valley also participated in the 3-point contest and did very well in the early rounds.

Peterson wouldn’t leave without a trophy, however. The future star at Virginia Military Institute defeated future WVU Mountaineer Elijah Macon in the dunk contest.

The 6-foot Peterson dunked over 6-7 West Virginia Player of the Year Donté Grantham, with an assist from future Utah Ute Ahmad Fields for his final dunk.
