Miners squeak by Panthers 6-4

NAUGATUCK – The Mingo Central Miners squeaked by the Panthers of Tug Valley 6-4 in baseball action on Friday at Naugatuck.
The Miners took a 2-0 lead in the top of the 2nd inning, but Tug Valley went ahead with three runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning. Both teams scored one run each in the 4th frame and the Panthers held onto a one run lead heading into the 5th inning.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, Mingo Central plated three runs to pull ahead 6-4 and held on to win.
Senior Garth Simpkins, the starting pitcher, had two hits, scored a pair of runs and had an RBI. Senior Matt Lester, who came on in relief, got the win on the mound. He had a hit, scored a run and an RBI.
B.J. Warden had a hit and scored twice, while Alex “Booger” Lee had a hit and scored a run. Caleb Spencer and Todd Slone also had base hits for MCHS. Mason Conley got credit for an RBI.
Junior David Runyon led Tug Valley with three hits and he knocked in a run. Jordon Mounts and Tyler Lucas each had two hits, while Philip Lucas had a single. Trevin Horn scored two runs for the Panthers.
