GOODY, Ky. – For the second consecutive day, the Belfry Pirates shutout the Phelps Hornets for a district baseball win. BHS rolled past PHS 11-0 in a five inning contest on Friday played at Massey Energy Field at Goody.
Belfry’s leadoff hitter Keaton Taylor got things going in the 1st inning with an inside-the park home run to left center. (This was the first homer for BHS since Madison Ghormley hit one on April 25, 2011)
Reed Williamson singled to left in the 1st, followed by a Zack Francisco walk. Then Joey Duty was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zac Fields then drew a walk and was credited with an RBI. Ghormley did the same, then Eli Huddle had a sac fly to center field scoring Duty. Then Cameron Johnson smacked a double to center, scoring Travis Maynard. Caleb Stanley also got a sac fly scoring Ghormley.
The Pirates led 6-0 after one inning of play.
In the 2nd inning, with two outs, Francisco tripled to right center and scored on an RBI single to left by Fields.
In the bottom of the 3rd inning, Johnson led off with double to left and then scored on RBI grounder to Phelps pitcher Zack Avina by Taylor.
Williamson then singled to left, Francisco singled between first and second and Duty singled to right bringing in both runs.
In the 4th inning pinch hitter Macky Francis was hit by a pitch, Keilan Carr pinch ran for Francis and then stole second and advanced to third base on an error by the catcher Kyle Sneed. Then Jacob Francisco, who was pinch hitting for Huddle, singled to left, scoring Carr.
Fields got the mound win for coach Michael Hagy’s squad, while Avina took the loss.
Belfry evened its record to 6-6 with the win and traveled to Louisville for some games on Monday and Tuesday.
Phelps is now 4-10 on the season.
