SOUTH CHARLESTON (AP) — Dow Chemical Co. and Alstom are planning a pilot project to capture carbon dioxide at the chemical company’s South Charleston facility.

A pilot plant will be designed, built and operated by Alstom to capture carbon dioxide from the flue gas of a coal-fired boiler at Dow’s facility. It’s expected to capture about 1,800 tons of carbon dioxide annually.

The companies said Monday that the plant is expected to begin operations in the third quarter of this year.

Alstom executive vice president Philippe Joubert said the pilot plant will validate the companies’ carbon capture technology for commercial use.
