PAINTSVILLE, Ky. - On March 17 the Tug Valley Bass Anglers held its first tournament of the 2013 season on Paintsville Lake. There was great turn out, with 29 anglers competing in the event.
The event was sponsored by Borders Sporting Goods.

Paintsville Lake was at normal pool and the water in the lake doesn’t get drawn down in winter like other lakes in this region. The water was stained on the entire lake except for the area around the dam which was clear. The water temperature was 43 degrees on the lower end and 47 to 48 on the upper end.
Weather for the tournament wasn’t the best but it did keep the traffic on the lake low, actually I think we were the only people on the lake. The day started out with a temperature of 40 degrees and rain, then by 10 a.m. and it dropped to 38 with snow and then sleet.
Tourney winner Kevin Runyon said it quit raining and warmed back up to 40 and remained there the rest of the day. Right at quit time it started raining again and rained throughout the weigh in. Runyon said it was not a great weather day.
The fish actually were biting pretty good if you were in the right area throwing the right bait, if you didn’t figure it out the bite was really, really tough,” said Runyon.
The fish were in early prespawn type locations, but they were pulled off and suspended and would not bite anything. The fish that was catchable were closer to the bank relating to laydowns and the outside grass line that runs down most banks on Paintsville.
The main pattern for this tournament was to fish crankbaits and plastic crawfish imitations on laydowns and the outside edge of the grass lines. The catchable fish were fairly shallow, 8-foot or less, but it took a lot of casts to catch one.
The top finishers are as follows.
1st —Kevin Runyon —- (5 fish) 5.01 lbs.
2nd —Shawn Smith —- (5 fish) 3.58 lbs.
3rd—Keith Pacific—- (3 fish) 2.88 lbs.
4th —MO—- (1 fish) 1.80 lbs.
5th —Gerry Adkins —- (4 fish) 1.65 lbs.
6th—Don Taylor —- (2 fish) 1.06 lbs.
7th—Michael Salyer —- (1 fish) .72 lbs.
8th —Kevin Marcum —- (1 fish) .65 lbs.
9th—Andy Maynard—- (1 fish) .64 lbs.
