GOODY, Ky. – There is an old adage in basketball that it is difficult to beat a team three times in a season. That proved to be the case again on Wednesday night when the Lady Pirates of Belfry upset Pike Central 39-31 in the 60th District championship game at the BHS gym.

Belfry (10-16) slowed the game down using a zone defense and deliberate style on offense to beat the Lady Hawks. Pike Central (20-10) had defeated the Lady Pirates twice during the regular season.

Emily Baker led Belfry with 11 points. She also had seven rebounds. Candace Gilman scored 10 points and Jackie Stack eight. Gilman also had seven rebounds.

“For a young team, I thought we executed our game plan,” said BHS coach Kevin Deskins. “I thought our 2-3 zone kept them out of their rhythm. I’m really proud of our girls tonight.”

Kassidy Prater led PCC with nine points, while Cassidy Campbell and Cameron Blackburn each scored seven.

In the game, Stack scored her 1,000th point of her career, with 2 free throws in the second quarter.

Both teams will advance to the 15th Regional Tournament at the Expo Center. The pairings will be drawn on Saturday morning.

Score by quarters:
