Lenore girls win Mingo County middle school tourney

RED JACKET – It took overtime and a gutsy come from behind effort, but the Lady Rangers of Lenore Middle School won the Mingo County middle school championship this past Saturday afternoon.


Lenore, seeded No. 1, edged the Lady Blue Devils of Kermit 37-34 in a game played at the Mingo Central High School gym.


Paeton Marcum gave Lenore a 35-32 lead with a 3-point play the old- fashioned way. Then Tommie Mounts got an offensive rebound and scored to give the Lady Rangers a little breathing room with :10 seconds left in the OT to make it 37-32. Kamelyn Brewer hit a jumper for KMS to make it 37-34, but the Lady Blue Devils ran out of time and Lenore earned the hard-fought victory.


Kermit jumped out quick and led 10-3 after one quarter. Lenore fought back to cut it to13-12 at halftime.


The two teams both scored 12 in the third quarter, but Lenore was able to tie the game at the end of regulation. The Lady Rangers outscored Kermit 5-2 in overtime to win the championship.


Taylor Parsley had a solid game for the Lady Blue Devils with a game high 18 points. Parsley fouled out in the final quarter and did not play in overtime.


Savannah Wilson led Lenore with 12 points, Including a pair of big 3-pointers in the second half. Paeton Marcum added 10 and Emily Colegrove eight for the Lady Rangers.


Lenore is coached by Billie May and Tim Sheppard, while Buddy Sartin coaches Kermit. LMS finished with a 16-3 record, while Kermit ended up at 10-9.


The all-tournament team consisted of Marcum, May, Wilson and Colegrove of Lenore, Parsley, Fitzpatrick and Spaulding of Kermit, Shylah Goff and Bobbi Varney of Burch, Makazia Rhodes of Williamson, Marleah York of Matewan and Allie Cline of Gilbert.


Bekah White of Williamson won the free throw shooting award making 22-25.
