Miners fall to Sissonville in conference game

SISSONVILLE – The rust from having several games postponed because of the recent snow and not being able to practice showed for Mingo Central Tuesday night as they lost a Cardinal Conference road game at Sissonville 74 to 61.
The Miners held a 10-9 lead after one quarter, but the Indians outscored the visitors 24-16 in the second quarter. In the second half Sissonville kept up their hot shooting and outscored MCHS 41 to 35 and held on to pull out the win.
“We played hard, but we were real rusty having that long layoff,” Miners coach Brad Napier said. “We didn’t shoot well either – probably about 30 percent from the floor.”
“They played a zone and we didn’t make the shots they gave us,” Napier added.
“They have a big team and have been on a roll,” Napier said of Sissonville. “Their coach (Rich Skeen) said that was the best game they have played all year. They shot real well.”
Mingo Central had defeated the Indians earlier in the season at home.
Mingo Central also got into some foul trouble. Senior Marqus Cunningham fouled out with about 7:00 minutes left in the game, while senior point guard Austin Banks had to sit out some due to foul problems.
Banks led the Miners with 19 points, while Matt Lester scored 14 and Alex Lee added 13. Banks dished out five assists, while Lee had 11 rebounds.
Anthony Bess led Sissonville with 20 points, Brent Rorabaugh scored 17, Zack Null 16 and Trent Stowers 11.
Mingo Central played River View Wednesday night at the Williamson Fieldhouse. This was a makeup game and played in West End because of the Mingo County girl’s middle school tournament is being held at the MCHS gym.
The Miners will have a rematch with county rival Tug Valley Friday night at Naugatuck and hit the road again Saturday night for another rescheduled game at Mt. View.
Napier noted that the away game with Belfry originally scheduled for Tuesday, February 19 has been rescheduled to Saturday, February 16. That was changed to accommodate BHS and their schedule.
