Mingo Central has its first Cardinal Conference champ and it comes from a sport new to the school and the area.

Terry Daniels won the conference tournament in his weight class (195 lb.) this past Monday, according to head coach Robert Hammond. He finished 3-0 in the event.

Justin Davis finished as runner-up in the heavyweight division losing to Herbert Hoover wrestler Richard Woods, who is one of the top ranked wrestlers in the state.

This is only the second year for the wrestling team. Hammond hopes to get more kids interested in joining the team next season.

The Miners are in the Class A/AA division. There are only two classifications in wrestling in West Virginia.

“We are in a tough region,” Hammond said. “It will be rough in the regional tourney.”

“These two wrestlers have put a lot of time in this,” he added. “They are both juniors and will be back next season. I hope we can get more students interested in joining the wrestling team.”
