WILLIAMSON — The Williamson Farmers Market will conduct a workshop series throughout the year, with the first event set for Feb. 2, at the community gardens.
The event is hosted by the Williamson Redevelopment Authority, but the workshops themselves are led by local, state and regional agriculture experts.
Maria Arnot, with the Williamson Redevelopment Authority, said that the workshops, “will aim to increase production at the community gardens and Mingo County orchard, which will ultimately increase local food access, as the produce is sold at the Farmers Market.”
Arnot also said the workshops “will help teach Mingo County residents how to grow their own food and reduce their food budget”
February’s event will begin at 1 p.m. at the community gardens. According to Arnot, “Landscape Architect Ingrid Curry will help you save money by starting plants from cuttings by learning plant propagation methods. You will also learn how to build your own mini-greenhouse to start your own vegetable and flower plant garden.”
Other events scheduled for the community gardens later in the year are as follows:
• March 29-30: Starting on March 29, at the gardens, followed by a session on March 30, at the Mingo County Orchard, North Carolina duo, Crystal Cook and Edward Marshall from the “We Are All Farmers Permaculture Institute” will work with participants on building soil, plant systems, water management, and animal systems at each location.
• April 20: Master Gardener Pauline Sturgill will teach participants the art of planting spring flowers and will share useful tips on how to best grow bountiful plants.
• May 4: Master Gardener Vinnie Kudva will share his expertise on producing unique crops such as Bottle Gourd, Elephant’s Ear, Chinese Beans and Japanese Eggplant
Other workshop series are set for the Mingo County orchard and are as follows:
• Feb. 9: John Porter, West Virginia University Extension Agriculture Agent will teach you proper tree trimming techniques at this Pruning Workshop.
• March 1: Learn Integrated Pest Management techniques at this workshop led by Dr. Daniel Frank, WVU Extension Specialty. He will instruct on how to set trap kits and lures for pests, and how to apply organic products.
• March 6: This workshop will help you to identify signs of diseases in fruit trees and how to prevent and manage these diseases. Dr. M. Mahfuzur Rahman, Assistant Profess & Extension Specialist at West Virginia University will lead the workshop.
Other events to be held later in the year include:
• June 2013: A canning workshop led by Kathy Wellman of Kat’s Kitchen will be held at a nearby kitchen following the first harvest of peaches and berries.
• August 2013: Wine making methods will be demonstrated at this workshop by local wine-maker Josh Martin.
