WILLIAMSON — The Williamson Farmers Market will resume in the spring at its regular location downtown, but planting, growing and harvesting has continued despite the colder winter weather.
“Planting in high tunnels lets you extend the season and have fresh crops during more months of the year,” local farmer, Doug Dudley, who has been assisting with the planting and harvesting at the tunnels, said. “Instead of planting for the spring in February, you can plant throughout the winter. This gives people the chance to eat greens that they otherwise couldn’t find fresh.”
Throughout the past few months, Farmers Market volunteers have been growing produce in two privately owned high tunnels located on Fourth Avenue. Most of the crops were planted shortly after the close of the summer market in October, and are now ready to be harvested and sold.
“Thanks to this extended season provided by the high tunnels, you can enjoy the taste of the following fresh, locally grown produce throughout the remaining cold winter months,” a release from the Farmers Market stated.
Currently available area limited supply of: fresh greens including kale, spinach, mustard greens, Swiss chard, lettuce and collard greens. There are also a plentiful amount of radishes and garlic available.
Produce will be picked fresh and individually for each purchase and will be available by request only, and while supplies last.
