Jessie Lee Varney Poffenberger, 94, of Delbarton, WV, died with her family by her side on January 6, 2013, at Appalachian Regional Hospital in South Williamson, KY.


Born October 17, 1918, in Mingo County, Jessie was the daughter of the late Bill Varney and Camma Dalton. She graduated from Burch High School in 1937 and was the oldest living BHS graduate prior to her passing. She married Nunley Poffenberger in 1938. They were happily married for 55 years before he passed away in 1993.


She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Everett Varney and Robert Dalton and four sisters, Willa Belcher, Ruby Clark, Denny Rose and Westa Herrell.


Jessie, a 5th generation family member, was a devout follower of the Baptist faith. Earlier in her life, she worked for Matewan Lumber Company, Johnson Furniture Company and the Mingo County Board of Education as a cafeteria cook at Delbarton Elementary School. In her latter years, she spent her summers making sure the hummingbirds had plenty to eat and tending to her many flowers. She had a true passion for flowers and quite the green thumb to go along with it. In the cold winter months, you could find her inside, spending time with her beloved cat, Bobbi. Jessie also had a love for quilting and recently won a first place award for best quilt at Delbarton Homecoming 2011.


Jessie is survived by her two children, Billy Lee (Patricia) Poffenberger of Morgantown, WV and Betty (Harvey) Stacy of Delbarton, WV; four grandchildren, Billy (Bev) Williams of Delbarton, WV, Kim Maynard of Delbarton, WV, Alan (Traci) Poffenberger of Morgantown, WV and Lisa Poffenberger of Cranberry, PA; nine great-grandchildren, Carrie (Joey) Elia of Williamson, WV, B.J. (Cemonet) Williams of Milton, WV, Jessica (Rick) Braswell of Raleigh, NC, Brandon Maynard of Delbarton, WV and Brittany Maynard of Delbarton, WV, Paige Poffenberger of Morgantown, WV and Carson Poffenberger of Morgantown, WV ; four great great-grandchildren, Taylyn and Azara Williams of Milton, WV, Tianna and Isaac Elia of Williamson, WV. Jessie also leaves behind many nieces and nephews, as well as, special neighbors Pete, Shirley and George Swain.


Visitation services will be held at Chafin Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 8, 2013, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. The funeral service will be Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 1:00 p.m. with the Rev. Mitchell Bias and the Rev. John Taylor officiating. Burial will follow at Williams Cemetery in Delbarton, WV.
