Belfry’s Messer named first team all-state

GOODY, Ky. – Belfry senior Tony Messer was named as a first team all-state linebacker on defense by the Louisville Courier Journal.

The 6-foot-5, 230 pound Messer played tight end on offense and also defensive end.

Messer had 82 tackles this season and three sacks for the Class 3A runner-up squad.

Messer is also a standout on the Pirate’s basketball team.

He reportedly has several scholarship offers, but has not decided on his future. Messer said he has gotten letters from several Division One colleges including Louisville, West Virginia, Eastern Kentucky and Western Kentucky.

Senior Madison Ghormley (6-0, 200 pound) was named to the third team defense as a linebacker. Ghormley was one of Belfry’s leading solo tacklers this season.

Two Pirate offensive linemen were named to the honorable mention list. They were seniors Derrick Jude and Zack Taylor.

Junior Sani Warren was named to the list as a defensive back. He was also Belfry’s starting quarterback and will return next season.

Junior Justin Johnson was named to the honorable mention list as a running back.

Weston Little, a running back from South Floyd, was named to the first team offense.

Others from this area that were named to the honorable mention list were Zack Avina of Phelps, Austin Black of Pikeville, Dylan Hamilton and Blake Rose of Betsy Layne and Justin Blevins of East Ridge.
